GIANT PANDA: The male giant panda can grow to an amazing five
feet tall and can weigh up to 270 pounds. The female giant panda
is slightly smaller and weighs less. Existing in only severely fragmented
populations of less than 250 individuals each, the giant panda is classified
as
extremely endangered. Giant pandas are poached as trophies and are
losing their habitat to human expansion. Even though they eat mainly
bamboo, they are considered carnivores.
LESSER PANDA: Similar in size to a large cat, the lesser panda
has a sixth digit near its wrist to aid it in eating. Although small,
the lesser panda is still endangered. Only 2,500 mature individuals
of this species remain in the wild, and this number is still declining.
Lesser pandas eat bamboo like their larger counter-parts.
